What is a DMC? How DMCs, tour operators and travel agents work together
A DMC, or destination management company, is a local business that organises travel services in its own destination: hotels, transfers, tours, guides and events. Most DMCs sell to travel agents and tour operators rather than to travellers. The agent sells the trip, and the DMC makes it happen on the ground.
What does a DMC do?
A DMC knows one destination well and has the local contracts to prove it. A typical DMC:
- Contracts hotels and holds rooms at agreed rates.
- Runs airport transfers and local transport.
- Organises tours, guides, activities and tickets.
- Handles groups, weddings, conferences and events.
- Looks after travellers on the ground, often around the clock.
DMC vs tour operator vs travel agent
| Who | What they do | Who they usually sell to |
|---|---|---|
| Travel agent | Advises travellers and sells trips | Travellers |
| Tour operator | Builds packages from several suppliers, often across destinations | Travellers, directly or through agents |
| DMC | Runs the services in one destination | Travel agents and tour operators |
| Online travel agency (OTA) | Sells hotels, flights and packages online, self-service | Travellers |
The lines blur. Many agencies also run their own tours, and some DMCs sell day tours straight to travellers.
How a booking moves between them
- A family asks their travel agent for a five-night trip to Dubai.
- The agent asks a Dubai DMC for a quote, at net rates.
- The DMC sends a day-by-day plan with hotel options and prices.
- The agent adds their margin and sends the family a quote.
- The family confirms and pays a deposit.
- The DMC books the hotel, transfers and tours, and sends vouchers.
- On the trip, the DMC's team looks after the family on the ground.
FIT, GIT and MICE explained
- FIT means free independent traveller (some say fully independent). One person or a small party on a custom trip.
- GIT means group inclusive tour. A group travelling together on one itinerary, often with a tour leader. How many people count as a group depends on the supplier.
- MICE means meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions. Business travel and events, often planned months ahead.
FIT quotes need speed and flexibility. GIT quotes need careful costing per head and clear rules on single rooms and children.
Why speed matters across the chain
Every step waits on the one before it. If the DMC takes a day to quote, the agent's quote takes a day too, and the family may have booked with a faster agency by then. The same is true in reverse: an agent who replies to the family in minutes still needs the DMC's prices to finish the job. Our guide to why the first clear reply wins covers the traveller's side, and the travel quotation format covers what the quote should show.
How Socavi helps DMCs and agencies
Socavi's Quote Agent builds day-by-day itineraries and prices them from your own contracted rates and packages, for FIT or GIT, and your team approves the price and margin. The Enquiry Agent answers enquiries on WhatsApp, email and web chat at any hour. The On-Trip Agent looks after travellers on WhatsApp during the trip. A Booking & Supplier Agent that requests holds and assembles vouchers is coming next. See the agents.
